The basic strength of the internet comes from the software model on which it is based. This software architecture has a meticulous design and is based on some rigid rules or protocols. These hardbound rules constitute a definite framework which is known as Internet Protocol. This Internet Protocol is divided into a number of layers and each of these layers has their own specialized function.

The foremost of the layers is the Application layer. This layer is mainly concerned with networking methods in software applications. Next is the transport layer which connects different applications on different platforms through the network. It is actually based on the client-server model. After this there is the Internet layer which enables two different computers to recognize themselves within the network through IP addresses or Internet Protocol addresses. In the end comes the Link layer which actually allows computers in a local network to communicate or link up with each other.

The internet can now be accessed by any means from virtually anywhere in the world. Mobile phones allow the user to log on to the internet from anywhere depending on the availability of cellular network there. Commercially the Internet has created a storm in the market with big companies using it as a safe and cheap method to conduct their businesses and advertisements. Thus Internet has become a part and parcel of our everyday lives and in terms of technology it can be called as one of the seven wonders of technological history.
